The Top 10 Breakdown: Phoenix

April 22, 2005
Lou Demian

After some bad luck in Texas, the president hopes for greener pastures in Phoenix. Too bad we're in the desert.

1st - Gasitnpassit: Gasitnpassit continues to lead the standings for his third week. Last weekend in Texas, many of the top 10 teams suffered mediocre to bad finishes, but Gasintpassit was able to finish in 11th place and putting some distance on the other teams in the top 10. He continues to lead the league in standings points, race points, average finish and race winners picked. Another good finish in Phoenix will continue to put more teams out of contention for the chase.

2nd – Pappy’s Drivers: Well a few streaks ended for Pappy in Texas. First his string of race winners picked, second his tring of top ten finishes and third, his streak of moving up each week as well. He had a 14th finish in Texas which isn’t bad at all considering some of the struggles other teams had. Pappy sits 41 points behind the leader and is in the perfect position. Third place is 85 points behind him, so there’s not much of a need to worry about falling. If he doesn’t make the top this weekend, as long as he keeps pace with Gasitnpassit, he’ll be up there before long.

3rd – CrazyAboutRusty2: He followed up his a win in Martinsville with a 24th place finish in Texas. Not the best finish, but because of the poor finish of Intimidator Racing, he was able to move up into the third position. It’s quite a distance to 2nd place, so he would need a top 5 and poor finish by Pappy’s Drivers to move up any. Well we all know one of the drivers he’ll be picking this weekend, let’s see if CrazyAboutRusty2 can do as well as his namesake.

4th – Intimidator Racing: Ouch… A poor poor finish of 38th place was a huge bump in the road for Intimidator Racing. His previous worst finish this year was 17th place, so that killed his average finish, race points and picks average. Still, 4th place isn’t a bad place to be. Intimidator Racing will dust himself off, get back in the car and make up for it in Phoenix.

5th – High Octane: Wow, High Octane finally found the throttle last weeked. His freefall ended with a nice third place finish in Texas. After falling out of the top 10, he jumped all the way back into the top 5. Now let’s see how he does. Perhaps he’ll have another good run in Phoenix keeping with his good 2 race run, but will he start another freefall after that?

6th – Miller MotorSports: Miller MotorSports is back into 6th place, where he started the season. He seems to like hanging around between the 6th and 9th place spots. He had a decent 12th place finish in Texas and will need another one in Phoenix to make the top 5 for the first time.

7th – Jerry Jones Racing: Dropped another spot last week as Miller MotorSports was just able to get past him in the race and in the standings. JJR finished 13th in Texas. He’s been very conservative with his superstar picks and isn’t in any immediate danger of falling out of the top 10, so he’s still fine. He better hope for good performances from his two normal drivers in Phoenix if he hopes to make up any ground or at least stay where he is.

8th – Fast Eddie Racing: The only team in the top 10 last week to have a top ten finish in the Texas race. He had 2 finishes that were under 20 the previous weeks, so his top ten helped him out. However, his finish wasn’t quite good enough to move him up any in the standings. If he gets another one in Phoenix he should be able to though.

9th – Bump And Go Racing: Bump And Go finally bumped himself into the top 10 and a 8th place finish in Texas. He was in the top 10 most of the year in 2004, so hopefully the same will be said for this year. He seems to have a hard time putting 2 good finishes together this year, but he’ll have to start doing so if he wants to stay in the top 10.

10th – Boogity Boogity Boogity: Boogied her way back into the top 10 after dropping out after Bristol. She struggled on the two short tracks but came back with a top ten run in Texas. Hopefully the west will be nice to her again and have a good run in Phoenix so she can climb up a bit further into the top 10.

Outside Looking in:

11th - Jeffjoeracing: Had a rough weekend in Texas, finishing 35th and dropping all the way out of the top 10 after getting up to 5th place. He had gained each week previously, but like Intimidator Racing, hit a major pothole in Texas. He should still be able to get back into the top 10 with a decent run in Phoenix.

12th – June Bug Racing: A few weeks ago you may have been asking yourself what’s up with June Bug, but his comeback over the last 3 weeks has been pretty remarkable. Two 4th place runs and a 6th place run pushed him up 22 spots and right outside the top 10. If he can keep the momentum going, June Bug Racing will be back into the top 10 this weekend.
