2012 Season

After the radical change with the points change across all three series in 2011, the eighth season of Lucky Dog Racing saw no changes from the previous year. There were a number of new rookies to start the season though. Paul Scannell, Ron Blackman, Dave Smith, Mitch McCown and Chip Anglin began their rookie season in the Cup series. A little later into the season Fred Moore and Jose Rodriguez joined as well.

Will Riney also returned to the Cup series after a six year absence. Will started a brand new team called Southern Style Racing and enlisted Mitch McCown, Terry Howell and Joe Levis. We also saw grandfather and granddaughter Frank Page and Charquillia Addison join together under Gopher Broke Racing.

Bob Douce kicked things off the same way he did the past previous two seasons, winning the Budweiser Shootout. Bob won the race three times in a row, the first time that anyone was able to pull off that feat.

The following week the season officially got underway with Stephen DiCaprio winning his first Daytona 500. Greg Eichele and Jordan Hunt picked up the next two wins and then we saw a surprise as veteran player Nathan Helton decided to leave the league and his team high and dry. Later on, owner Matt Sealey did the same thing to his other two teammates. It was the end of the once dominant Racing Traditions, Inc. who won three championships in a row. Stephen DiCaprio and Dean Higley would pick up the pieces and move on though. Stephen took over as owner and eventually would add Jose Rodriguez after he was called up to the Cup series.

Stephen DiCaprio led the standings for most of the first two months while Gary Wheat would be the dominant driver leading up to the Chase. He would pick up three wins in that time. Gary's team, Northeast Ohio Motorsports would also be dominant and untouchable in the team standings.

Harry Jeffery won the All-Star race and cash challenge which gave him some extra money in his pocket.

By the time the Chase rolled around, Northeast Ohio Motorsports was dominant, placing all 4 of its drivers into it. Gary wheat would go in first then Jordan Hunt, Robby Stone and Bob Douce. Leon Baker also had a very good year and would go in as the 2nd seed. Defending champion Harry Jeffery was 6th, Dean Higley 7th, Ed Blackman 8th, John Sherman 9th and Troy Wiggins 10th. Greg Eichele would get the first wildcard spot thanks to picking up 2 wins during the season. Rookie Paul Scannell would get the 2nd wildcard spot, just barely making it into the top 20 by 4 points.

During the Chase the non-chasers would spoil the party most weeks, in fact there were only two races won by a Chase driver and that would be Leon Baker both times at Dover and Texas.

Throughout the Chase, nobody was able to take command which set up a very tight points race at Homestead. John Sherman had the points lead going in but it would be Dean Higley who came from 4th place to win his 2nd Cup championship. Dean became the 2nd driver with two Cup championships to his name. The rest of the top 5 were all separated by 5 points. Bob Douce finished just one point behind in 2nd place, Troy Wiggins finished 3rd, 3 points behind. Ed Blackman and John Sherman tied in points and were both 5 behind the leader.

Northeast Ohio Motorsports were quiet during the Chase but had built up such a large lead that it did not matter, they became the third different team in the last three years to win the team championship. Lou Demian won his 2nd best of the rest title along with also winning the streak to the finish challenge. Fred Moore won rookie of the year.

In the Nationwide series, Brian Blair ran away from the rest of the field and clinched the title the week before in Phoenix. He became the 2nd Nationwide driver to win both the championship and rookie of the year title.

Jordan Hunt held on to win the Truck series championship which was the first for him. He also became the 2nd driver to win both a Cup championship and a championship in either the Truck or Nationwide series.

In LROC's seventh season, The Cool Pool won their first title since the very first year of LROC. P10 Select finished in 2nd place while Lucky Dog Racing finished in a disappointing third place.

Overall 2012 was another successful year for the league, but looks forward to celebrating its 10th season in 2013.
