2010 Season
2010 ushered the league into its 7th season of operation. While there weren’t many changes in the Cup series, there were a couple of changes in the other 2 series. The Nationwide series had its bonus claim jumper drivers broken into three different segments, which prevented rookies coming late into the season a big advantage over the rest of the field.
The Truck series saw a change with its segment drivers making it mandatory for everyone to pick one driver from each class.
There was also a change in the LROC Series as well, The Cool Pool returned for the first time since the first season, replacing FASCAR who closed its doors.
For the Cup series, there were a few items that were discussed during the off-season but in the end there were just a couple of changes. First was a slight modification to the All-Star eligibility which only allowed wins recorded between each All-Star race rather than the races earlier in the previous season.
The second change for the Cup series was an amended penalty policy for missed picks. Only the first time that picks were missed would allow for ½ the points received. All other times would result in zero points.
The 2010 season started with the exhibition Shootout which consisted of members picking enough polesitters to qualify for the race. Shortly before the race, NASCAR changed the procedure to allow all the Chase drivers, previous Shootout winners and past champions in. Lucky Dog Racing announced they would adopt that procedure next season. Bob Douce won the Shootout and received a free entry into the first segment of the money pit.
Finally the Daytona 500 was upon us which marked the start of Cup series careers for 6 rookies. Debuting in their first race were John Magee, Ron Parlacoski, Jr., Bob Thomas, Jeffrey Ouderkirk, Leon Baker and Marvin Jones. Ryan Smith would win the Daytona 500 and lead the way in the standings until a little bit before the Chase began.
The first rookie to win a race was Ron Parlacoski, Jr. at Phoenix in April. Eventually all of the rookies would wins races throughout the season except for Joe Levis who came in late in the year and only ran 2 races.
One of our rookies would leave us after 8 races into the season. Bob Thomas stepped aside making room for Hurricane Sidwell to make his debut at Talladega in April. Later on one of our veteran racers, Bob Baldridge, Jr. would also leave the league. That opened the door for 2 time Champion Greg Miller to return since leaving the league at the end of the 2006 season.
There were many different race winners throughout the season, in fact nobody won more than 2 races. When the Chase came upon us, leading the way was Nathan Helton who had led the 7 weeks leading up to the Chase. Making the Chase this year was Nathan Helton, Dean Higley, Stephen DiCaprio, Ryan Smith, Matt Sealey, Ed Blackman, Harry Jeffery, Troy Wiggins, Lou Demian, Gwen Demian, Kevin Sullivan and just barely making it in, Larry Scroggins. Intimidator Racing, Inc. and Racing Traditions, Inc. had all 4 of their drivers make it in. In addition to becoming the first teams to have all drivers in, both teams had their drivers finish 1-2-3-4 in a race during the year.
Nathan Helton won the first race of the Chase but faded soon after that. The Non-Chase drivers won all of the races except 2 during the Chase. The hottest driver was John Sherman who had missed the Chase but easily won the Best of the Rest Championship. Racing Traditions, Inc. also wrapped up their third team Championship in a row after Phoenix.
Entering Homestead, the battle for the Championship was the closest in league history. About 10 drivers had a chance to walk out the winner. Larry Scroggins had a 6 point lead over Stephen DiCaprio while Ryan Smith was in third place 15 points back. Instead it was Gwen Demian who surprised everyone with a 6th place finish in the Ford 400 and went on to win her first ever Championship.
Leon Baker won a close race for the rookie of the year over John Magee. Stephen DiCaprio won the Power Gauge Championship in the final race of the season. Ed Blackman won by tiebreaker over Troy Wiggins in the Chaser Eraser. Nathan Helton was awarded the Most Valuable Teammate for Racing Traditions, Inc.
John Magee won his first Championship in the Nationwide series while Lou Demian won his second Truck series title. In LROC, Lucky Dog Racing finally won its first team championship as Dean Higley won his 2nd drivers Championship.
Near the end of the season, veteran driver Marty Fleissner exited the Cup series to be replaced by Joe Levis. It was revealed that 4 more rookies would be challenging for the rookie of the year title in 2011.
The 2011 season should be another good one, just three races in and the league will celebrate another milestone, the 250th Cup race.
